High-value Vintage Baseball Cards from 1950’s and 1960’s Saved from Trash by Twin Brothers
Thousands of vintage sports cards with many pulled from packs!
A rare collection of vintage sports cards from the 1950s and 1960s — including legendary names like Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Jim Brown — has surfaced after being stored for over 40 years in a Detroit home. Twin brothers started collecting the sports cards in1962 at age 7. The entire collection of vintage baseball and sports cards were nearly thrown out in the 1980s but were saved just in time by the brothers. They stopped their father from tossing the cards in the trash.
The collection includes thousands of vintage baseball cards, along with football and hockey cards from Topps, Bowman, and O-Pee-Chee. Most were pulled straight from packs and kept in remarkable condition.
Now at age 68, the brothers were trying to figure out where to sell the vintage sports cards and they chose Auction Monthly. Auction Monthly specializes in selling vintage and modern sports cards and memorabilia, both directly to buyers and through select auction partners.
The Collection’s Story: A Childhood Passion
The collection began in 1962, when the twin boys, then age 7 in Grosse Pointe Farms (a Detroit suburb), started buying packs for “just ten cents at the corner party store.” Their passion grew, driven by their status as huge fans of the Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings. They even traveled across the border to Windsor, Canada, to acquire sought-after O-Pee-Chee Hockey cards.
By 1970, when they stopped collecting, they had amassed thousands of cards, with over 95% pulled directly from packs.
A Near Disaster Averted
The entire collection almost ended up in the trash in 1983. As one brother recalls, their father – while cleaning out the basement – called to say he was throwing the cards out. A quick response saved the entire vintage sports card collection. “I told him I’d come over immediately and pick them up,” one twin recalled. “That call saved the collection.”
Iconic Players and Rare Finds
Preserved in good overall condition thanks to the care the twins took, the collection features a wide range of vintage issues, including:
- Topps Baseball, Football, and Hockey
- Bowman Football
- O-Pee-Chee Hockey
- Rare non-sports trading cards
The majority are baseball cards, and they feature some of the most iconic names in sports history, including:
- Mickey Mantle
- Willie Mays
- Hank Aaron
- Johnny Bench
- Bobby Orr
- Pete Rose
- Jim Brown

One brother noted, “It was a labor of love… We spent a lot of time organizing and protecting them. The cards are very sentimental to me and my brother.”
The 68-year-old brothers have now chosen to liquidate the collection through Auction Monthly so their family members won’t have to handle the task later.
